La Mamounia, Marrakech, Morocco: Review

When I read about La Mamounia’s reputation I knew I was in for a real treat, but nothing could have prepared me for just how wonderful my stay was going to be. From the enchanting setting to the most opulent interiors, it was immediately evident why it has been voted one of the most beautiful hotels in the world. With service to match, I could not have wished for anything more.

Calm in the Heart of the City

Perfectly positioned next to Marrakech’s vibrant medina, top cultural sights like the bustling Jemaa el-Fnaa square and the Koutoubia Mosque are just a short walk away - incredibly convenient for guests wanting to explore the exciting city. And yet despite the proximity to the hustle and bustle, the moment you step inside the gates of the hotel you are transported to a calming oasis. The sounds of nature create a peaceful atmosphere, instantly melting all stresses away.

World-Class Hospitality

I arrived to be greeted with the warmest smiles and most genuine hospitality. Every staff member, from the concierge to the housekeeping team, went above and beyond to ensure my stay was perfect, from whisking away my bags and welcoming me with a delicious almond and orange blossom milk drink and fresh dates, to providing excellent recommendations for local experiences, to putting slippers out for me each evening before bed. The level of professionalism and attention to detail made me feel incredibly well cared for and at home.

A Palatial Masterpiece

The hotel itself is magnificent. Breathtakingly so. Each tiny detail has been carefully considered to ensure every stay here is truly memorable, taking guests on a journey of discovery. The rich history is celebrated alongside modern amenities creating interiors that are classy, timeless and elegant. Grand hall spaces are majestic with ornate features - the newest addition being an elaborate sculptural chandelier to celebrate the 2023 centenary - while intimate alcoves with luxurious furnishings provide cosy places to hide away.

The charm continues into each and every one of the 135 rooms, 71 suites and 3 riads. My suite was beautifully decorated, with intricately carved wood detailing, moroccan tiles, luxurious fabrics, and handcrafted furniture adding an authentic touch. The private balcony overlooking the gardens was a perfect spot for a morning coffee or watching the sunset. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the amenities were of the highest quality, including soft bathrobes, luxurious toiletries and homemade sweet treats to enjoy when I arrived.

With such understated charm, it’s no wonder that this place is well-known amongst the stars. From Charlie Chaplin to Kate Winslett to Orlando Bloom to Anthony Hopkins, the Wall of Fame showcases the illustrious figures who have stayed. Churchill in fact recalled La Mamounia as “the most lovely spot in the whole world”, and a Pullman carriage inspired bar now honours his name.

Get Lost in the Gardens

The gardens at La Mamounia are breathtaking. Spanning over 17 acres, the perfectly manicured grounds are filled with olive trees, fruit trees, cool varieties of cacti and beautiful bird song, creating a tranquil and lush paradise. Palm-lined pathways invite you to enjoy a leisurely stroll, while a huge outdoor pool is the perfect spot to soak up the sun, with sun loungers, a bar and (my favourite touch) a little ice cream truck.

Culinary Delights

Dining at La Mamounia is exceptional. The breakfast is one that I haven’t stopped thinking about since, with a buffet like I’d never seen before - loaves of freshly baked sourdough, piles of perfectly flakey croissants with delicious fillings, tarts, cakes, homemade granola, yogurts and berries, freshly squeezed juices, platters of colourful fruit, a continental station with whole wheels of cheese, freshly made hot moroccan specialities, perfectly cooked eggs however you like… All enjoyed by the pool in the morning sunshine, it was heaven.

For dinner, guests can choose from a variety of cuisines, with Asian, Italian and Moroccan restaurants all on site, as well as nibbles and small plates served at the bars. I fancied a taste of the local food, so after a wonderful cocktail in the Bar Majorelle, I opted for a tasting menu at Le Marocain. Each dish was meticulously prepared and presented, with vibrant flavours and fresh ingredients. The scallop starter and monkfish tagine were both standouts, and the recommended wine pairing was perfect. The atmosphere was lovely and lively too, with guests happily chatting away over traditional live music and service with a smile.

Fantastic Facilities

A highlight of my stay was the incredible spa with hammams, a relaxation room, gym, sauna, and the most picturesque indoor pool I’ve ever seen. With a range of luxurious treatments available too, this is the ultimate place to relax and escape from everyday life. And the facilities continue, with clay tennis courts, a games room, boutique shops and even a cinema with twice daily viewings - you could happily spend days here without ever stepping foot outside.

A Stay that Dreams are Made of

My stay at La Mamounia was nothing short of magical. From the luxurious rooms to the top-class service, this hotel deserves every bit of its iconic status. Whether you're looking for a relaxing retreat or a base to explore Marrakech, the perfect balance of both exists right here. I would go back in a heartbeat.
