How to make tidying truly fun

Our friends at the Clean & Tidy Home Show are all about helping you live your best life - much like our mission! We’ve teamed up to bring you some awesome tips to *actually* enjoy the tidying process. Read on for all the motivation you need to make your house into your dream home.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: cleaning should be a celebration.

After all, everyone deserves a healthy and happy place to call home. But finding the time, the energy, and the motivation is *really* hard - especially when there are a million urgent things going on in your life.

That’s why we’re here to bring you some of our top tips for keeping your home organised in a mindful way. A fair warning: clear your weekend schedule, because you’ll be motivated to finally embark on that overdue declutter after you read this.

  • First, get in the mood.

    • Not in a dirty way - we’re talking tidying here! Cleanfluencers (the brand of social media stars dedicated to organisation porn) may seem strange if you’re new to the genre. But trust me, they’ll get you truly excited to clean. We highly recommend checking out Netflix’s Get Organized with the Home Edit and Tidying Up with Marie Kondo - or, if you think TV shows about neatness won’t be your speed, try TikTok accounts like thefoldinglady and theonlywayispink, or The Home Edit’s cute and colourful Instagram page. Use their peaceful images of organised pantries as motivation.

  • Think of it like mindfulness.

    • Because most of us see tidying as a chore, we’re usually starting off on the wrong foot by griping about the tasks ahead rather than embracing them. Starting off with a simple affirmation can completely change your attitude. Before you start organising, sit quietly for 30 seconds and remind yourself that you deserve a clean home and that this will improve your well-being and relaxation. Imagine exactly what it feels like to be in a clean home - use this as your motivation. Then, while you clean and organise, take periodic pauses to notice and enjoy your progress.

  • Pick a tidying process that works for you.

    • The great thing about the rise of tidying experts is that there are so many different philosophies you can follow to help you successfully declutter. Stylist Allison Bornstein has an amazing Closet Editing System that really works for our Editor in Chief, Holly, while our Staff Writer Julia recommends the KonMari Method. Rely on the Internet’s wealth of resources and find a method that works for you. Better yet, try a few and make it an on-going project to find a philosophy you like - that way, tidying will feel less like a chore and more like a novelty experience.

  • Make the process enjoyable.

    • It goes without saying - everything is more fun with a podcast or playlist on. Spice up the process by dancing around your house to this upbeat playlist or listening to a silly podcast like Why Won’t You Date Me? With Nicole Byer. Indulge fully in the sensory experience by burning a delicious candle while you fold laundry or clean out the junk drawer. After you’re done, give yourself a little reward, whether that’s a luxurious lemonade, an at-home pedicure, or a bubble bath.

And once you’re done with all that, do check out the Clean & Tidy Home Show. You’ll gain access to amazing resources - plus a community that’s dedicated to improving their lives.
