Six journal prompts for the new year

Person journalling

And just like that, 2023 is drawing to a close!

I always find that once December arrives, everything that’s gone on throughout the year condenses into a big blur. But taking stock of everything that’s happened - both cherishing the fun moments and reflecting upon the trickier times too - can be a really worthwhile exercise.

This is especially true as we look ahead to the new year. It’s impossible to think about 1 January without also thinking about resolutions - those ambitious, sometimes self-punishing promises we make to ourselves with the aim of being “better”.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with making resolutions; deciding to create healthier habits can only be a positive thing. But pledging to make lasting, fundamental changes to our lives can put a lot of pressure on ourselves - and that’s why,  this year, we’re interested in doing a bit of meaningful reflection instead.

We’ve thought up six journaling prompts that encourage you to reflect on 2023 and look ahead at the year to come.

It’s a more open-ended and less structured way of thinking about any 2024 resolutions - and we hope you find it a fulfilling and worthwhile exercise!

Looking back on 2023

  • The key lessons I’ve learned are …

  • The most memorable moments I’ve experienced are …

  • The things I’m most grateful for are …

Looking ahead to 2024

  • The things that make me happy and that I should try and do more often are …

  • The message to myself that I will repeat throughout the year is …

  • One personal goal I want to achieve in 2023 is …

(This last one could be anything from getting a library membership, to trying wild swimming, to being more honest with the people around you about how you’re feeling, to making a career switch…)

Happy writing!
